Laurence Todd was born December 15, 1882 in Nottawa, Michigan. He was a reporter for the Kalamazoo Gazette (1904-05), later its city editor (1907). During this period, 1905-1908, Todd also attended the University of Michigan but did not graduate. He next moved to California, working as a reporter for the San Francisco Bulletin (1909), the San Francisco News (1909-1912), and as correspondents for the Scripps news service in. Sacramento (1912).
